Our mission
Good eyesight for everyone
Eye for Zambia supports setting up an eye clinic in Zambia to make good eyesight possible for all.
When elderly people have low vision, children often stay at home to help. With a cataract surgery the eyesight can be restored and the elderly can participate again in daily life: working, raising children, setting up a business etc. The child can go (back) to school, because his (grand)parents no longer need support. This is another way to break the cycle of poverty.
Of the almost 13 million residents in Zambia, a significant number of people are blind or have low vision. Approximately 80% of blindness and low vision in this group is treatable and thus unnecessary. Eye disorders such as cataracts and refractive errors are relatively easy to treat.
Improving peoples’ eyesight has a major effect on the quality of life of an individual. It effects the individual personally, his or her environment and also contributes positively to the national economy. Academic research has shown that every $ 1 invested in the above gives a return of $ 4 economically.
Compared to the Netherlands with 618 opthalmologists, Zambia has 25 opthalmologists. There is also a large deficit of opticians. Many people have limited access to qualified eyecare due to the long travel distance and the high travel costs.
The arrival of an eye clinic in Zambia can improve the accessability of good eye sight for many people.
Eye clinic
The construction of an eye clinic can make qualified eye care available to all.
Training
Training local professionals is at the heart of our work. An education brings self-sufficiency and creates more opportunities to help others in the surrounding areas.
Cataract surgery
Cataracts are the main cause of avoidable blindness worldwide. They can be treated relatively easily with a 15-minute-surgery.
Glasses
An unadjusted refractive error is the main cause of avoidable low vision worldwide. Wearing glasses can have a great impact on someone’s life and environment.
Prevention & Screening
A one time antibiotic dosage can prevent blindness. Testing school children for glasses can change their future dramatically.
Low vision
There is a rather large group of people with eye problems that cannot be treated. The clinic could also help these people with rehabilitation to make their life easier
